- Story Text: In a surprise move, an Iranian government jet landed in Biarritz on Sunday (August 25), where leaders of the G7 group of nations are meeting.
Biarritz's airport has been closed for the duration of the summit from Saturday (August 24) to Monday (August 26).
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif jetted in as French President Emmanuel Macron ramped up efforts to ease tensions between Tehran and Washington, and held talks with his French counterpart.
U.S. President Donald Trump was not forewarned by France that Zarif would meet a French delegation on the sidelines of a G7 leaders' summit, a White House official said on Sunday.
European leaders have struggled to calm a deepening confrontation between Iran and the United States since Trump pulled his country out of Iran's internationally brokered 2015 nuclear deal and reimposed sanctions on the Iranian economy.
