- Story Text: Protesters from indigenous communities and Greenpeace joined locals on the streets of Rio de Janeiro on Sunday (August 25) to call on Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro to protect the Amazon rainforest.
Chanting "Out Salles!" (Brazilian Environment Minister Ricardo Salles), the protesters also led a prayer for the Amazon. "We have love for the Amazon, we have love for planet Earth, we will not remain silent in face of this policy of indifference which puts profit above human dignity and above Mother Earth," said a protester holding a loud speaker.
Michael Baret Cunha, the first indigenous person admitted to the Rio State University under a quota system, said the fires affected the whole planet.
"We need to stop all of this. Most of Brazil was already devastated and now it’s advancing to the Amazon, and it will also devastate the Amazon. We cannot let this happen, because the entire planet will suffer. The consequences will not be just for Brazilians, but for all of us on the planet."
Dramatic aerial photos of the Amazon forest fires showed a devastated indigenous territory in the state of Mato Grosso.
Brazilian warplanes are dumping water on the burning forest in the Amazon state of Rondonia, responding to a global outcry over the destruction of the world's largest tropical rainforest, according to a government video.
