It's not only about the Amazon - the Amazon is of course a really big problem, it's a complete disaster what is happening there -- but there's much more than this. There are fires in Africa, there are fires in Siberia, fires everywhere, but there's more than fires. So this is one of many mobilizations to try to tackle the climate emergency." - Story Text: Some 500 protesters gathered outside the Brazilian embassy in Brussels on Monday (August 26) to protest against Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro's policies and his response to the Amazon fires.
Playing drums and blowing whistles, they danced samba and waved banners reading: 'Stop Burning the Amazon' and 'Hands off the Amazon.'
One of them, activist and artist Christophe Meierhans, said the fire offered an occasion 'to mobilize and to raise awareness about the general emergency crisis.'
The peaceful demonstration, co-organized by climate activist group Extinction Rebellion Belgium, took place as nearly 80,000 fires have been registered across Brazil through August 24, the highest since at least 2013, according to space research agency INPE.
The Amazon is the world's largest tropical rainforest and its protection is seen as vital to the fight against climate change because of the vast amounts of carbon dioxide it absorbs. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
