- Story Text: A steady stream of migrants crossed unhindered from Greece into Macedonia on Sunday (August 23) after overwhelmed security forces appeared to abandon a bid to stem their flow through the Balkans to western Europe following days of chaos and confrontation.
Migrants boarded trains at Gevgelija train station in Macedonia on Sunday on their way north to Serbia.
One migrant from Syria, Firas managed to board a train.
"So happy," he said with a smile when asked how he felt.
Another migrant, Aslam from Syria waited in Greece for the border to open, he said he was hopeful for his future.
"I think it was closed for three days. But now today we just came today from Athens and it was better," he said.
"I feel better, you know, coming from a war country and now I hope to live a good life and in a safe place, so I hope everything gets better, let's see what happens."
Macedonia laid on extra trains and buses for the migrants to take them north to Serbia and the next step of a long journey from the Middle East, Africa and Asia. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
