- Summary: HONG KONG, CHINA (AUGUST 27, 2019) (REUTERS) ***WARNING: CONTAINS FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY*** HONG KONG CHIEF EXECUTIVE CARRIE LAM WALKING TO PODIUM FOR WEEKLY NEWS BRIEFING (SOUNDBITE) (English) HONG KONG CHIEF EXECUTIVE, CARRIE LAM, SAYING: "The question of resignation has also been answered. I think a responsible chief executive at this point in time should continue to hold the fort and do her utmost to restore law and order in Hong Kong. And I wouldn't say that my government has lost control. Day in, day out, we are not only supporting the law enforcement bodies, we are also acting responsibly to deal with other issues." WHITE FLASH (SOUNDBITE) (English) HONG KONG CHIEF EXECUTIVE, CARRIE LAM, SAYING: "So I remain committed to serving the people of Hong Kong with humility. So, that's perhaps the best response that I could give at this point in time, in order to ensure that we can come out of this havoc as soon as possible." WHITE FLASH (SOUNDBITE) (English) HONG KONG CHIEF EXECUTIVE, CARRIE LAM, SAYING: "We will adopt one yardstick, one yardstick, in dealing with all forms of violence. So even if it concerns the police officer, that same yardstick applies. So, the police has already taken very decisive action against the suspected offenders in the police force in that particular incident. That is the firm position of the Hong Kong SAR government as well as the force." WHITE FLASH (SOUNDBITE) (English) HONG KONG CHIEF EXECUTIVE, CARRIE LAM, SAYING: "So I'm saying that; yes, we have to say no to violence. We want to put an end to the chaotic situation in Hong Kong through law and enforcement and so on. At the same time, we will not give up on building a platform for dialogue. Now, in the last two months or so, the government has repeatedly given a reply to the demands from different people. So, it is not a question of not responding. It is a question of not accepting those demands." WHITE FLASH LAM LEAVING NEWS BRIEFING

- Story Text: Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam said on Tuesday (August 27) that she will continue to 'hold the fort' as leader in response to a question on whether she has considered to resign in order to 'restore' law and order.
"We are not only supporting the law enforcement bodies, we are also acting responsibly to deal with other issues", Lam told reporters at a weekly news briefing.
Lam was speaking in public for the first time since anti-government demonstrations escalated on Sunday (August 25), where police fired water cannon and volleys of tear gas in running battles with protesters who threw bricks and petrol bombs.
The Beijing-backed leader said she was confident the city's government could handle the unrest by itself and she would not give up on building a platform for dialogue.
The Chinese-ruled city is grappling with its biggest political crisis since its handover to Beijing in 1997, with Communist Party authorities having sent a clear warning that forceful intervention is possible to quell the violence.
