- Story Text: Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg is nearing the end of her zero-carbon transatlantic journey on Tuesday (August 27), according to a digital map.
Thunberg began her journey on August 14th from Plymouth, United Kingdom and has experienced rough weather, with the teenager saying it reached a speed of 30 knots an hour (56 kph), though she still appeared in high spirits.
"Last night we hit 30 knots and we are about 300 miles from Nova Scotia and it's very rough, very high waves" she said in a video uploaded to social media on Sunday (August 25).
The 16-year-old is headed towards New York, where a UN environmental summit is to take place, and in posts on social media, Thunberg says she expects to arrive on Wednesday (August 28).
The 60-foot yacht has been equipped with solar panels and underwater electricity turbines to ensure that it leaves no carbon footprint. Conditions on board are Spartan, with no shower or toilet, and meals will consist of freeze-dried food.
The teenager, who shot to global fame last year after she started missing school every Friday to demonstrate outside the Swedish parliament, is taking a year off school to travel around the Americas and further her campaign for stronger action against climate change.
