- Story Text: Hollywood hearthrob Brad Pitt says he believes life exists outside of Earth but that he wouldn't be too keen to travel to space, even if given the chance.
Pitt journeyed to Venice, Italy, on Thursday (August 29) to premiere his new space epic "Ad Astra", which is screening in Competition at the 76th Venice Film Festival.
The actor has had a busy summer promoting "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood" and he said bringing out another highly-anticipated movie on the heels of the Tarantino film was "not the perfect situation". However, he was quick to add he was happy to return to Venice where he in 2007 premiered "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford".
In "Ad Astra", Pitt plays an astronaut who is sent to outer space to look for his father.
His father, played by Tommy Lee Jones, disappeared during a mission that is said to have been aimed at finding advanced extraterrestrial life but also experimented with material threatening the entire solar system.
"I like to believe there is (life) somewhere. To what degree, more advanced than us, less? Who knows. I like to believe that there is," Pitt said when asked if he believed in extraterrestrial life.
He said that while possibilities for commercial space travel were becoming more likely, his willingness to embark on a journey to the moon or the space were diminishing with age.
"Surely in my younger years I would've. Now it's like 'how long?' How long do I got to be away from home and my loved ones? What's the set up? Camping? Nah. On the moon? Probably not," he said.
While the film looks to the far reaches of the solar system, Pitt said it was important people started taking better care of our home planet.
"We've got to step up, there's no question," he said.
"People are still trying to hold onto an old regime and an old money-making process. Come on. Come on, we got to go. We got to go and we will. We are just late. It seems to be our way," he said.
"Ad Astra" is due to be released in the United Kingdom on September 18 and the United States on September 20, 2019.
