- Story Text:Mexicans living near their country's northern border with the United States said a border wall under construction by the United States was a "political issue" and that much of what is under construction is merely replacing existing segments.
Oscar Esparza, a migration expert from the Colegio de Chihuaua in the border city of Ciudad Juarez on Thursday (August 29) said U.S. authorities, "aren't building new walls, they're substituting the ones that that they already had."
Another migration expert, Rodolfo Rubio, said, "many people think and believe that it is a political issue, it's to keep the issue alive, that people keep talking about it, discussing it, the people that don't understand the border will think it's going to stop (immigration)."
U.S. President Donald Trump has made stemming the flow of migrants across the southern border a centrepiece of his administration, likening the situation to a crisis and using that argument to justify his demand to build a wall along the frontier.
