- Date: 30th August 2019
- Summary: HONG KONG, CHINA (AUGUST 30, 2019) (REUTERS) ***WARNING: CONTAINS FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY*** VARIOUS OF PRO-DEMOCRACY ACTIVISTS AGNES CHOW (LEFT) AND JOSHUA WONG (RIGHT) STANDING OUTSIDE HONG KONG'S EASTERN LAW COURTS BUILDING WONG HOLDING COURT DOCUMENT (SOUNDBITE) (English) PRO-DEMOCRACY ACTIVIST JOSHUA WONG, SAYING: "We strongly experience the political persecution and arrest in the recent months. Two months ago, I served all of my jail sentence and left prison. Unfortunately, under the chilling effect generated by the Beijing and Hong Kong governments, we are strongly aware of how they arrested activists, no matter if they acted progressively or moderately. All we ask for is just to urge the Beijing and Hong Kong governments to withdraw the bill, stop police brutality, and respond to our calls for free elections." MEDIA GATHERED OUTSIDE OF COURT (SOUNDBITE) (English) PRO-DEMOCRACY ACTIVIST AGNES CHOW, SAYING: "We can see very clearly that the regime and Hong Kong government is trying to create a white terror to try to scare the Hong Kong people to not participate in the social movement and in the democratic movement in the future. But we Hong Kong people won't give up and won't be scared by these white terror and injustice. But we will keep on fighting for democracy, and the five demands of Hong Kong people, including a complete retraction of the extradition law." WONG AND CHOW SPEAKING (SOUNDBITE) (English) PRO-DEMOCRACY ACTIVIST JOSHUA WONG, SAYING: "Even (though) I've been jailed for three times, and I need to face the trial on the eight of November, which means three months later, but we still keep on our fight. We shall not surrender. And I urge the international community to send a clear message to President Xi--sending troops or using the emergency ordinance is not the way out. We will continue our fight, no matter how they arrest and prosecute us." CHOW SPEAKING/ WONG SPEAKING TO MEDIA (SOUNDBITE) (English) PRO-DEMOCRACY ACTIVIST JOSHUA WONG, SAYING: "As we know that how Reuters had the report that, the news report that Beijing realised they will never accept to withdraw, or terminate, the extradition bill, that still exists. It just implies that one country two systems is already eroded to a one country, one and a half system. And a high degree of autonomy is strongly being eroded under the chilling effect of the troops moving to the border and about the emergency ordinance, which means that Beijing just continually manipulate on Hong Kong's people's freedom. And we shall never surrender." MEDIA GATHERED OUTSIDE OF COURT

- Story Text: Hong Kong democracy activist Joshua Wong said he will not surrender even after he was charged by Hong Kong police with organising an illegal protest on Friday (August 30).
Wong and fellow activist Agnes Chow were charged with unlawfully organizing a public meeting outside police headquarters on June 21. They were released on bail and the case was adjourned until Nov. 8.
"A high degree of autonomy is strongly being eroded under the chilling effect of the troops moving to the border and about the emergency ordinance, which means that Beijing just continually manipulates on Hong Kong's people's freedom. And we shall never surrender," Wong told media just outside of Hong Kong's Easter Law Courts.
Police arrested several other activists and blocked plans for a mass demonstration on Saturday (August 31), in a show of force a day before the fifth anniversary of China's decision to rule out universal suffrage in the former British colony.
