- Story Text: Indonesia's chief security minister on Friday (August 30) urged calm again in the eastern most region of Papua after two weeks of sometimes violent protests, saying demonstrators' demand for investigation into a racial discrimination incident had been met.
Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Wiranto made the remarks during a joint news conference with several Papuan figures in the country's capital, Jakarta. Speaking alongside the minister, Samuel Tabuni, founder of Papua Language Institute, also urged calm, but called on the government to treat Papuans more fairly.
More than 1,200 police officers have been flown in to reinforce Papua province where shops and vehicles were torched.
Papua has been racked by the biggest series of civil unrest in years, over perceived racial and ethnic discrimination, though some protesters are also demanding an independent referendum - a move the minister had ruled out a day earlier.
The spark for the latest unrest was a racist slur against Papuan students, who were hit by tear gas in their dormitory and detained in the city of Surabaya on the main island of Java on August 17, Independence Day, for allegedly desecrating a national flag.
