- Story Text:Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte met and held talks at the Great Hall of the People Beijing on Friday (August 30).
Friday's meeting comes a day after Duterte held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing and a time of tensions between China and several south east Asian countries including The Philippines over the South China sea.
Duterte's top defense officials are outraged after a Chinese trawler sank a Filipino boat in June and scores of Chinese militia boats surrounded a Philippine-held island. Repeated unannounced movements of Chinese warships within the Philippines' 12-mile territorial waters has incensed the military, and is stoking concern about spying.
Ahead of his his visit Philippine President vowed to raise with President Xi a 2016 arbitration ruling that invalidated China's claim to sovereignty over most of the South China Sea. During the meeting with Xi, Duterte expressed his view that the path to peacefully resolving the South China Sea disputes is through cooperation, rather than confrontation, Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported.
Duterte arrived in China on Wednesday (August 28) and will depart on Sunday (September 1). His visit is also scheduled to include the opening ceremony of the 2019 International Basketball Federation (FIBA) World Cup in Beijing, Xinhua said.
