- Story Text: Twenty-nine Libyan migrants disembarked from the Italian navy vessel 'Cassiopea' on Monday (September 2) in the Sicilian port of Pozzallo, said the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
The migrants were all Libyans and included "families and many kids", UNHCR Communications officer Marco Rotunno told Reuters. He added that the migrants departed from Libya at least six days ago and they were rescued by the Italian navy after having been at sea for days.
Also on Monday, a group of 135 migrants, rescued by the German rescue ship 'Eleonore' and Italian rescue vessel 'Mare Jonio', disembarked in Pozzallo and Lampedusa after Italian authorities denied the two ships the permission to enter Italian territorial waters.
Italian authorities are banning non-governmental organisations from bringing migrants ashore, after outgoing Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini imposed a closed ports policy in the last year to stem illegal immigration from North Africa, calling for other European countries to share responsibility for refugees' shelter.
