- Story Text:Russian President Vladimir Putin flew to Russia's Far East on Friday (September 6) in order to check up on the construction of the new Vostochny cosmodrome.
Putin said to the officials, responsible for Vostochny's construction, that he expects them to be responsible and meet the construction deadlines.
According to the plan, a medium-class launcher - Soyuz-5 - should blast off in 2022, while a Super Heavy Rocket made of multiple booster stages from Soyuz-5 would be launched in 2028.
The Vostochny spaceport, in the remote Amur region near the border with China, was the flagship project in Putin's planned $52 billion investment in space exploration up to 2020.
Moscow wants Vostochny, where it hopes to exploit a new generation of rockets carrying heavier payloads, to rival its current launch site in Kazakhstan, the lease of which has been in contention since the 1991 breakup of the Soviet Union.
