- Story Text: French startup Redison has launched a new sensor-based tool for musicians that turns any surface into a virtual drum kit, allowing budding percussionists "to play drums everywhere, on everything."
The patented Senstroke system features two small sensors that are clipped onto a standard pair of drum sticks. Using a smartphone app, they reproduce the movements and impact of the sticks as they play an invisible drum kit.
"You select real elements like your legs, like a book, like a cushion - whatever you want. And for each element, you associate them with a drum part; for example the snare or hi-hat. And after that, with the app, when you hit the real surface the app will generate in real-time the drum sound," Redison founder Jérôme Dron told Reuters at the IFA technology show in Berlin where Senstroke was being exhibited.
Redison says drummers can use Senstroke to configure a customised drum kit on any surface; hearing their beats through speakers or plugging in headphones to their smartphone, which makes it perfect for practising without annoying the neighbours.
Senstroke starter kits costs 160 euros (approx. 176 USD), with the full sensor kit cost 219 euros (242 USD)
