- Story Text: Top diplomats from dozens of nations in East Asia and Latin America gathered in San Jose on Friday (August 21) for the three-day Forum for East Asia - Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC) conference to promote closer ties between the two regions.
Costa Rica is hosting this year's talks that will cover diverse areas such as education, sustainable development and investment.
Speaking on the sidelines of the forum, Costa Rica's Foreign Minister Manuel Gonzalez called on the private sector to do its bit in bringing together East Asia and Latin America.
"Better relations in respect to education, through universities and better relations with our productive sectors. The path was opened by states but it is also the responsibility of the private sector," said Gonzalez.
Brazil, Korea, Vietnam and Ecuador are among the nations participating in the talk, with delegates divided into four groups to tackle the breadth of the items on the forum's agenda.
"It is a very important forum that links these two regions and the areas of cooperation encompass all areas of cooperation be they political, on economics as well as cultural and people-to-people links. There are four working groups that have been established. This is already the 16th year, we are going onto the 17th year. At this particular meeting we will be trying to strengthen and streamline the working methods," said the Permanent Secretary for Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs Norachit Sinhaseni.
FEALAC was established in 1999 to promote cooperation in a variety of areas between Asia and Latin America, which in sum account for 40 percent of the world's population and over a fourth of the world economy.
Organisers of the conference say bi-regional trade between East Asia and Latin America is growing almost twice as fast as the world average. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
