I mean all our demands are so clear from the very beginning and she knows it very well, and if she keeps on telling us that (there will be) no commission of inquiry, no universal suffrage, then I think that is the end of it. So, it is not fruitful to meet her at all." GENEVA, SWITZERLAND (SEPTEMBER 16, 2019) (REUTERS) VARIOUS OF PRO-DEMOCRACY HONG KONG LEGISLATOR TANYA CHAN WALKING TO HER SEAT, THEN SITTING, AT U.N. In the past 22 years, we can see there is an erosion of freedoms, erosion of human rights, erosion of so many core values in Hong Kong and I don't want this to continue. So, democracy - to have an accountable government - I think is the foundation of a better future of Hong Kong."

- Story Text: Hong Kong pro-democracy legislator Tanya Chan rejected any kind of dialogue with Hong Kong authorities on Tuesday (September 17), as the former British colony's leader Carrie Lam said she and her team would begin talks with the community next week.
Lam, who is under pressure from Beijing to defuse the public anger stirring the protests, said the talks would be as open as possible, with members of the public able to sign up to attend.
Chan, who was in Geneva on Monday (September 16) to address the U.N. Human Rights Council over police violence against protesters, said that Lam's overture was a political gesture.
The former British colony has been rocked by more than three months of sometimes violent clashes, with demonstrators angry over what they see as creeping interference by Beijing in Hong Kong's affairs, despite a promise of autonomy.
Hong Kong returned to China in 1997 under a "one country, two systems" formula that guarantees freedoms not enjoyed on the mainland, including an independent legal system.
