And then you come to clear out the major stuff and you see that you have to throw everything that's left into the rubbish. I don't know what do because I'm feeling very anxious, it's the first big shock we've had. And the helplessness - what do you do? What, what? Although they come to give you water and help you if you need anything, I need them to come and tell me, 'Come on, we're going to clear out your house, we're going to air it out.' I need them to help me, I know there are people helping but who do I call for help?" - Story Text: Residents in the Spanish town of Almoradi in the southeastern province of Alicante continued to deal with the aftermath of floods on Tuesday (September 17), after the region was hit by two consecutive days of torrential rain last week.
Local resident Maria Salud Torres, who returned to her house to find most of her household belongings and possessions damaged, said she would have to throw most of them away, and that the town still had no running water.
"I'm just a bit swamped. I have three elderly people (to take care of), there are four of us in the family, my house is small and I'm overwhelmed by this. And here we are," said Torres, who said she was in need of more help but did not know who to turn to.
Although clean-up efforts are well underway in the town, with trucks being employed to clear away water and mud, much of the town is still flooded.
During last week's floods, military emergency units were forced to carry out helicopter rescues in Almoradi and the municipality of Callosa de Segura, also in Alicante, to get stranded people to safety.
Weather conditions have since stabilised following the record-breaking rains which claimed six lives.
