So you have these wonderful, unobstructed views of the other iconic buildings in the city. You're looking at the Capitol, at the White House and the Lincoln Memorial and, and the Jefferson Memorial so, you know, it is, if... It, it certainly should be on everybody's list of, of what to do you know when you're in Washington, D.C. or certainly to plan a trip to, to come see those things." It had been almost 20 years since, since that all had been done thoroughly. And the second part of the project was to build the permanent screening facility where visitors go through to get their bags checked and, and you know make sure everything is secure coming in. The temporary building that was there had been built in 2001. So it had been on the list to, to get funded and constructed. We were able to do those concurrently to minimize the, the length of time that the, the monument was closed." And just for that momentary you know, I can't believe that you know, that this is this is where I work you know. When the day comes that there's not that thrill, that's when you know it's probably time, time to hang it up but... Yeah, I mean, the Washington Monument, especially after so long of it being closed and you know, I spend more of my time in front of a computer screen now than, than I wish I did. But you know to now be able to every now and again say, 'I have to go to the Washington Monument and you know, do an interview or take people up,' yeah, that's always, that's always a great thrill." - Story Text:Some of the best views in Washington, D.C. will be available to tourists and visitors alike as the Washington Monument reopens Thursday (September 19) to the public after a 37-month closure to modernize elevators and security.
At 555 feet (169 meters), the Washington Monument is one of the most iconic structures in the U.S. capital and offers spectacular views of the city's landmarks.
From its windows, visitors can easily identify the White House, the U.S. Capitol building, the Lincoln Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial.
Designed by Robert Mills and constructed in the late 19th century, the monument was built in honor of the first president of the U.S. and founding father George Washington.
It hosts hundreds of thousands of visitors a year, who enjoy the unparalleled views which can be credited not only to its unique location, but to its identity as the city's tallest building.
This was the second time this century the monument underwent significant restoration, after closing from 2011 to 2014 to repair damage following an earthquake.
