- Story Text: German violinist Stefan Arzberger is due in court in Manhattan on Thursday (August 20) accused of attempted murder, assault and strangulation after the musician allegedly forced his way into the hotel room of a tourist in March.
Arzberger, the lead violinist for the famed Leipzig String Quartet, who has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him, allegedly forced his way into the room of a 64 year-old North Carolina woman and began to strangle her.
Arzberger says he has no recollection of the events and claims he was drugged and robbed by a transsexual prostitute who came back to his hotel room, according to local media reports.
Reuters attempted to reach Arzberger and his lawyers for comment but they have not responded to questions about the charges.
Arzberger has been released on $100,000 (USD) bail.
Arzberger is schedule to appear for a hearing before a judge on Thursday, August 20th.
The website for the Leipzig Quartet says Arzberger is being temporarily replaced by violinist Conrad Muck, a long-time member of the Petersen Quartet. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
