- Story Text: Swedish police on Friday (August 14) detained a stowaway who was found in the cargo bay of a plane after a flight from Ethiopia to Stockholm.
The jet landed at Arlanda airport after the eight hour, 5,800 kilometre (3,604 miles) flight from Addis Ababa and baggage handlers found him as they unloaded the plane.
Airport operator Swedavia's spokesman Henrik Kelfve confirmed the Ethiopian national had been handed over to police.
Kelfve said the man, thought to be in his 20s, was lucky to be alive.
"He was feeling okay which is sort of lucky since the temperature in freight areas can be low if they are not heated and also the oxygen level can be low so he had luck. We had a nurse attend to him and he got a cup of warm tea and the police took it from there," he said.
Kelfve said it was now up to the Ethiopian airport to investigate how its security had been breached.
"How this was able to happen is a question that has to be addressed to the airport in Ethiopia," added Kelfve.
Police questioned the man and then handed him over to a migration authorities.
According to local media reports the man intends to seek asylum in Sweden. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
