- Story Text: President Enrique Pena Nieto joined Mexico City Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera on Wednesday (August 19) to call for justice for the unsolved murder of photojournalist Ruben Espinosa and four women found dead in an apartment in the Mexican capital last month.
Espinosa's killing alongside four others on July 31 in an apartment in central Mexico City has prompted an outcry from free speech organisations and human rights activists and spurred protests in the capital.
Espinosa, 31, who worked for the weekly magazine Proceso and the photo agency Cuartoscuro, had sought shelter in Mexico City earlier this summer saying he had been followed and threatened in the eastern state of Veracruz.
Speaking at a government event in the capital, Pena Nieto said that authorities have strengthened their efforts to apprehend those responsible for the crime.
"With the very relevant case of the multiple homicides, without a doubt prosecutors are committed to strengthen their efforts and to give opportune and proper attention to the investigation and arrest of those responsible of aggression, attacks, murder against journalists and human rights defenders," he said.
In a rare move for Mexico, a group of investigators from Mexico City's prosecutor's office travelled to Veracruz earlier this month to take a statement from Duarte over the deaths.
Mexico City Mayor Mancera said that no line of investigation into the murder will be dismissed by authorities.
"One more time another unfortunate multiple homicide that summons us to unite our efforts. We're going to need the support of various bodies but we're not going to dismiss, and I want to leave this clear again, any lines of investigations. All need to be followed through, everyone should work with the care required in an investigation such as this," added Mancera.
Mexico's Gulf coast state of Veracruz is one of the most dangerous states for reporters. According to the Committee for the Protection of Journalists, 11 journalists have been killed there and at least three others have disappeared since 2011, all under Duarte. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
