- Story Text: Portuguese police removed hundreds of climate change activists, mainly Extinction Rebellion protesters, from one of Lisbon's main streets on Friday (September 27) evening following a peaceful demonstration earlier in the day.
Throughout the afternoon, thousands of young protesters took over Lisbon's streets in a climate strike inspired by Swedish teenage activist Greta Thunberg.
But later on a group of hundreds of protesters holding Extinction Rebellion flags blocked one of the city's main arteries.
Protesters put up tents and sat down outside the Bank of Portugal building, but have since been removed by authorities.
A Reuters witness saw some of the protesters being dragged away by the police.
As police removed protesters from the middle of the Almirante Reis Avenue, some shouted: "This is not what democracy looks like."
Thunberg, 16, is credited with inspiring the school strikes which started as solitary weekly protests outside Swedish parliament a year ago and has since become a worldwide phenomenon.
On Monday (September 23), Thunberg denounced world leaders for failing to tackle climate change in a speech at the start of a climate summit at the United Nations in New York.
Millions of young people poured onto streets around the world last Friday (September 20) to demand governments attending the summit take emergency action.
