This time around I feel like those who were involved in 2014 (Umbrella movement) we've learnt a lot and that's why currently it can continue to sustain for so long." - Story Text: Hong Kong protesters recreated so-called Lennon Walls throughout the city on Saturday (September 28) as they marked five years since the start of the 'Umbrella' democracy movement.
The Lennon Walls are large mosaics of Post-it notes calling for democracy which have cropped up in underpasses, under footbridges, outside shopping centres, at bus stops and universities and elsewhere across the territory. Some had been torn down by pro-Beijing activists.
The student-led Umbrella protests gridlocked the city for 79 days in 2014 but failed to wrest concessions from Beijing.
Now, protesters are angry about what they see as creeping Chinese interference in Hong Kong, which returned to China in 1997 under a "one country, two systems" formula intended to guarantee freedoms that are not enjoyed on the mainland.
China vehemently denies meddling. It has accused foreign governments, including the United States and Britain, of inciting the unrest.
A series of pro- and anti-Beijing protests is planned for the Chinese-ruled city ahead of the 70th anniversary of the People's Republic of China on Tuesday (October 1).
The gatherings will include a rally near government offices, a march on Hong Kong island and a some flash mob events to commemorate the Chinese national day.
