- Story Text:Kyoto-born designer Satoshi Kondo debuted as Issey Miyake's new designer on Friday (September 27) in Paris Fashion Week, with a festive collection light enough to float in.
Kondo said he wanted to evoke a "sense of joy" in the collection of airy dresses and layered ensembles with splashes of raspberry pink, lime green and lilac.
Models skated in lightweight nylon raincoats, and twirled in striped "parasol" frocks that featured Issey Miyake's trademark pleats.
"I wanted to look into the relationship between the human body and clothes. And I wanted to express the joy of wearing clothes and the joy of movement. So you see the models dancing, almost like in the wind, moving together," he said.
Shunning classic vertical runways, Kondo sent down models in a square-shaped catwalk at the Cent Quatre art space in northeastern Paris.
Color-blocked pleated sun dresses descended from the ceiling over models, who jumped up and down to enhance the effect of the bouncy fabric. Loosely-woven tasseled dresses were paired with fan-shaped bags that models waved across the catwalk, to the electronic lunar music of French singer Delaurentis.
Issey Miyake is known for its use of pleating technology that renders its fabrics malleable and fluid. In this collection, it also experimented with the idea of a "piece of cloth" with minimal cutting and sewing, as shown in the loose raincoats.
Paris Fashion week runs until October 1st.
