French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday (September 30) said he would continue to plead with the Unites States for the removal of Sudan from Washington's state-sponsored terrorism list, adding that it was "essential" for the recovery of the East African country.
Macron was speaking at a news conference after meeting with Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok at the Elysee presidential Palace in Paris.
Hamdok had held talks with U.S. officials while at the United Nations last week, and expressed hope Khartoum could reach an agreement to be removed from the black list.
Abdalla Hamdok, an economist, was appointed in August as leader of a transition government, vowing to stabilize the country and repair an economy battered by years of U.S. sanctions and government mismanagement during Omar al-Bashir's 30-year rule.
Macron also told reporters that France was to host an international donors conference for Sudan but said he could not give a date as it depended on the lifting of sanctions by the United States.
