This is very hard for me because while I was waiting there, I dreamed the beginning of a very different day. I had no knowledge of today. When I look back I don't want to remember that day, but they always ask me about that day and the day I don't want to remember is commemorated here, but I did this for Jamal. I did this for everything Jamal believed in. We had to give this message." CENGIZ BEING INTERVIEWED (SOUNDBITE) (Turkish) FIANCEE OF MURDERED SAUDI JOURNALIST JAMAL KHASHOGGI, HATICE CENGIZ, SAYING: "An event in any place wouldn't be enough for this. We did not aim to gather people and hold a conference. Our aim was to deliver a message and I think that message was delivered. People who love Jamal are here. People who care about what Jamal believed in are here. I am also here. I think we fulfilled our duty." CENGIZ BEING INTERVIEWED (SOUNDBITE) (Turkish) FIANCEE OF MURDERED SAUDI JOURNALIST JAMAL KHASHOGGI, HATICE CENGIZ, SAYING: "Jamal couldn't get out of there but if they (Saudi authorities) will not remove that memorial, he will be leaving that consulate and live there (at the park) forever. He left the consulate. His name and the values he cared about have spread around the whole world. This sounds like consolation but it is not. It really is not. It was not Jamal who couldn't leave the consulate that day. It was the values he believed in. They tried to keep those values there but that voice got out even stronger." U.N. - Story Text: Hatice Cengiz, fiancee of the murdered Saudi journalist Khashoggi, said on Wednesday (October 2) she had not planned to go back to Saudi consulate in Istanbul ever again, but she did it for her beloved.
Speaking to Reuters after a memorial ceremony outside the building marking the first anniversary of Khashoggi's murder, Cengiz said the spot was chosen to give a message.
"I think that message was delivered. People who love Jamal are here. People who care about what Jamal believed in are here. I am also here. I think we fulfilled our duty," Cengiz said in tears.
Khashoggi, a critic of the Saudi crown prince, was murdered on October 2 at its consulate in Istanbul. His dismembered body has never been found. A global outcry ensued and led to U.S. Treasury sanctions on 17 Saudi individuals and a Senate resolution blaming Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Saudi officials have denied suspicions in the CIA that the crown prince, known as MbS, ordered the killing.
