Hong Kong police on Wednesday (October 2) showed what they described as evidence of devices used for making petrol bombs and weapons allegedly used in violent protests after the Chinese-ruled city was rocked by the worst violence since the pro-democracy movement started in June.
Police held a news conference to showcase the evidence they had gathered a day after a teenager was shot in the chest at point-blank range as he fought an officer with a metal pipe in Tsuen Wan district.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Tang Ping-Keung said the police had raided nearly 50 premises across Hong Kong between September 30 and October 1, leading to the discovery of several properties being used for the production of petrol bombs.
More than 100 people were wounded during Tuesday's (October 1) turmoil, the Hospital Authority said, as anti-China demonstrators took to the streets on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic, throwing petrol bombs and attacking police who responded with tear gas and water cannon.
During one clash, an officer shot an 18-year-old school student in the chest with a live round after coming under attack with a metal bar, video footage showed. The teen was in stable condition in hospital on Wednesday.
