And, similarly when you can come into a school or any environment with good intent, with good honor, in the pre-existing institutions of power are so strong, it can be stifling. But then that's why you've got to fight back, and you've got to push on, and I'm just thinking this now, but that's maybe a strong allegory with climate change in this movie too, and maybe not, maybe it'd be cynical and pessimistic through the lens of the movie, but that there's a young person with good intent, trying his best to do what he feels is right, different than his father, and different than the prior ruling class. And I'm sorry for such a long answer." CHALAMET ON RED CARPET VARIOUS OF "THE KING" ACTRESS, LILY ROSE DEPP, ON RED CARPET (SOUNDBITE) (English) "THE KING" ACTRESS, LILY ROSE DEPP, SAYING: "I mean that's what was so, so exciting to me, even just upon like reading the script for the first time was just the strength that was depicted even just in the writing, it was evident to me that David (Michod) and Jill, who wrote the script with him, really wanted to showcase the strength that women did have in that time period, even they weren't really afforded the voice to kind of voice that strength. The fact that they gave her that voice and allowed her to voice her own truth and her opinions and her strength in that way it was really really beautiful. It was a really great way to end the movie, and yeah I was really honored to be able to play that role." PAN OUT OF DEPP "THE KING" DIRECTOR, CO-WRITER AND PRODUCER, DAVID MICHOD, HOLDING SMART PHONE (SOUNDBITE) (English) "THE KING" DIRECTOR, CO-WRITER AND PRODUCER, DAVID MICHOD, SAYING: "Well it was really challenging. You know, it's like all the different environments we needed to engineer. I mean you know we shot a lot in England just for architecture, but went to Hungary for like a great old wild European landscape. Then there are places, where there's all the stuff that happens in, it's like the dirty part of 15th century London. So that doesn't exist anywhere and we're fortunate that we were able to kind of build that in Hungary and in a way that just blew my mind and I felt like I was a little kid getting them to play with, it was a 'pinch myself moment.' Sets that are extraordinary." (SOUNDBITE) (English) "THE KING" ACTOR, CO-WRITER AND PRODUCER, JOEL EDGERTON, SAYING: "It has political resonance. You know, we separated ourselves from the Shakespeare text in order that we could have our own, you know, put our own thoughts into political agenda, you know and I think people can mine from the film reflections on different, for example, presidencies, different leaders even within this country and others, about what it means to be young and ideological or like a somebody who thinks their princely in their attitude to come in and change the system, and yet the system can change you quicker and more overnight than you could perhaps presume to change the system." - Story Text:Even the oldest of stories about rulers and their ruled still have resonance in the modern world. So was the thinking of the creators of the upcoming Netflix movie, "The King," loosely based on William Shakespeare's "Henriad," the series of plays by the Bard that takes on historical events.
Rising star, Timothee Chalamet, goes from reluctant heir, "Hal,†to powerful monarch in "The King."
"It has political resonance," said Joel Edgerton, who was a producer, and plays "Sir John Falstaff," the drunk best friend. "You know, we separated ourselves from the Shakespeare text in order that we could have our own, you know, put our own thoughts into political agenda, you know and I think people can mine from the film reflections on different, for example, presidencies, different leaders even within this country and others, about what it means to be young and ideological or like a somebody who thinks their princely in their attitude to come in and change the system, and yet the system can change you quicker and more overnight than you could perhaps presume to change the system."
When Hal's father, Henry IV, dies, he reluctantly ascends the English throne, assuming new responsibilities and vowing to bring order and peace to the warring chaos he has inherited.
The 23-year-old actor, known for "Beautiful Boy" and "Call Me by Your Name" which earned him an Oscar nomination, said he had not done film stunt work as he did in "The King", which includes a key scene replicating the 1415 Battle of Agincourt.
In speaking to Reuters, Chalamet expects young people just starting out in life to relate to his rendition.
"I think, at this age, couple years earlier in my life, I think people at my age, you can relate to finding yourself in circumstance, whatever it is in life, where your skill set is, it pales in comparison to what's needed," he told Reuters.
Lily-Rose Depp, who plays the daughter of France's King Charles, Catherine, told Reuters she was honored to play a leading woman in an era when such a figure was far from prized.
"The fact that they gave her that voice and allowed her to voice her own truth and her opinions and her strength in that way it was really, really beautiful," Depp told Reuters about her character.
"The King" also stars "Twilight" actor Robert Pattinson as the French heir and Ben Mendelsohn as Henry IV.
The movie will appear in select theaters on October 11 and will be available to be streamed on Netflix on November 1.
