- Summary: HONG KONG, CHINA (OCTOBER 2, 2019) (REUTERS) SCHOOLMATES HOLDING NEWS CONFERENCE WHILE EGG DROPS PAN-DEMOCRAT LEGISLATORS CHANTING WHILE HOLDING UP PLACARDS AND PHOTOS (SOUNDBITE) (English) PAN-DEMOCRAT LEGISLATOR ALVIN YEUNG, SAYING: "It is (the) international standard that all law enforcement officers, they should apply non-violent, or less lethal, means, when it comes to critical situations. And yesterday, obviously, we can see that the police officers who shot the young protester, at the chest, it was not the least lethal means. The question is, when the police officer, or when the Commissioner of Police, spoke to the press last night, he has already jumped to the conclusion that it was entirely reasonable and legal. But did the police conduct any inquiry or did they conduct any investigation internally regarding such matter? Obviously not.†NEWS CONFERENCE IN PROGRESS (SOUNDBITE) (English) PAN-DEMOCRAT LEGISLATOR TANYA CHAN (CENTRE, WEARING BLUE CLOTHING), SAYING: "The situation in Hong Kong is very critical, and I urge our government to respond to our five demands as soon as possible. It's Carrie's duty. And it's only Carrie Lam (who) can at least manage the situation and to give Hong Kong hope that things will return to a better position. We are so close to a point of no return, and she has missed so many golden opportunities. And I think this is her last chance, because we don't want to have any loss of life.†MORE OF NEWS CONFERENCE (SOUNDBITE) (English) PAN-DEMOCRAT LEGISLATOR TED HUI, SAYING: "I decided to launch this private criminal prosecution because I see no other means of achieving justice at all in this distorted police complaints system that is controlled totally by the government, totally by the police force itself. And then it is important, also, because it is, I believe an effective deterrent, that police officers should be held personally liable when they abuse their weapons, when they abuse their police power, when they can arbitrarily arrest people or even shoot people, kill people." - Story Text: A news conference held by schoolmates of a teenager shot point-blank by a Hong Kong police officer was interrupted by eggs dropped from above on Wednesday (October 2).
As the students spoke, dozens of primary schoolchildren shouted slogans of the pro-democracy movement: "Revive Hong Kong" and "revolution of our time". But later, the group and members of the media were pelted with eggs by residents as a drone hovered overhead.
In another part of Hong Kong, opposition Pan-Democrats held a news conference and slammed the city's police force for shooting a teenage protester with live firearms during the city's chaotic National Day protests.
Police have said the officer involved was under serious threat and acted in accordance with official guidelines, but the pan-democrats claimed the police had failed to provide a proper investigation of the incident. Ted Hui, a legislator for Hong Kong's Democratic Party, said he was planning to start legal action to reveal the identity of the policeman who shot the protester. The shooting marked the first time after months of protest that police shot directly at a protester with a live round. Previously police used bean bags rounds and rubber bullets on the protesters, firing live rounds only in the air.
