Indonesian search and rescue were trying to reach the crash site of in a forested, mountainous area in remote Papua province on Monday (August 17), after reports of debris of a crashed aircraft being spotted in the area.
Footage from local media TV One showed searchers were preparing for search efforts at Jayapura, the capital of Indonesian eastern-most province.
The Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) team was also deployed to gather DNA samples from the family members of people on board the flight.
The Trigana Air Service ATR 42-300 plane crashed on Sunday (August 16) half way from Sentani Airport in Jayapura to the southern town of Oksibil.
Heavy clouds initially delayed plans for an aerial survey to locate the plane, but searcher staff said on Monday morning they had managed to locate a signal emitted from the plane.
State news agency Antara quoted Bintang Mountains Regency police chief Yunus Wally as saying that debris thought to be from the plane had been sighted in the heavily-forested area.
All those on the plane were Indonesian nationals -- 44 adult passengers, five children and infants and five crew, officials of the search and rescue agency said.
Still pictures provided by Antara to Reuters showed family members waiting for updates at Sentani Airport.
Air transport is commonly used in Papua, Indonesia's easternmost province, where land travel is often impossible.
Trigana Air Service has had 14 serious incidents since it began operations in 1991, according to the Aviation Safety Network. Excluding this latest incident, it has written off 10 aircraft.
The airline has been on the European Union's list of banned carriers since 2007 due to safety or regulatory concerns.
Indonesia has a patchy aviation safety record and has seen two major plane crashes in the past year, including an AirAsia flight that went down in the Java Sea, killing all 162 on board. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
