I experienced divisions then, and I would say that it is not a question of whether there are or not divisions. The question is how we live them, and I hope that with the great leadership of Pope Francis, with the help of the cardinals and many others in the church we will have more dialogue and I really also hope, if I may say so, that the media can help us to communicate those elements of dialogue which are underway and not only the frictions." - Story Text: Newly inducted cardinals greeted their friends and relatives at the Vatican on Saturday (October 5) after receiving their red hats and rings from Pope Francis at a ceremony in St. Peter's Basilica. The Pope created 13 Roman Catholic cardinals, including 10 who are under 80 years old and thus eligible to succeed him one day.
"I hope that with the great leadership of Pope Francis, with the help of the cardinals and many others in the church we will have more dialogue", Cardinal Michael Czerny, a Canadian who was born in the former Czechoslovakia and is currently the Vatican's expert on migration, said.
Cardinals under 80, known as cardinal-electors, can enter a secret conclave to choose a new pope from their own ranks after Francis dies or resigns.
"I feel the awareness of responsibility", Cardinal Frivolling Ambo Besungu, archbishop of Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo, said.
Francis chose to give the prestigious and influential rank to a number of men from poor or developing nations, as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Indonesia and Guatemala, places he calls the periphery of the Church and which he feels deserve more attention.
The geographical distribution of the new cardinal electors reflects Francis's desire to give more clout to small national churches outside of Europe and North America, countries on the periphery of world political power. Nearly 50% of the cardinal electors now come from the developing world.
