- Story Text: "The Joker" himself, Joaquin Phoenix, surprised fans by dropping by a multiple screening of the "Joker" film at Alamo Drafthouse LA on Saturday night (October 5).
Dressed in a dark-coloured hoodie, Phoenix took time to meet with fans at each theater, answer questions and snap selfies.
"Joker" opened in movie theaters worldwide this week after winning the top prize at the Venice film festival last month, and is the first film where the Joker is the lead character, but there is no Batman.
Set in 1980s New York, the Warner Bros film is a standalone origin story that depicts the man who becomes Batman's arch-nemesis as an isolated, bullied, delusional, mentally-ill loser who unwittingly inspires a populist rebellion manned by other outcasts adopting red noses and clown masks.
With an estimated $93.5 million, "Joker" has delivered the "largest October domestic opening ever," in the States, according to Box Office Mojo, passing the $80.25 million opening figure for "Venom" last year, and closing in on $93.8 million taken for "Justice League" in 2017.
