- Story Text: The British joint winner of 2019's Nobel Medicine Prize said on Monday (October 7) that he was delighted and honoured to have received the award.
Peter Ratcliffe of Oxford University and two Americans won the prize for discovering a molecular switch that regulates how cells adapt to fluctuating oxygen levels, opening up new approaches to treating heart failure, anemia and cancer.
Ratcliffe, who is also clinical research director at the Francis Crick Institute in London, said he was "delighted, honoured" by the news and that it was "a great tribute to lots of people in my lab."
He worked alongside William Kaelin at the U.S. Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School and Gregg Semenza of Johns Hopkins University to jointly win the 9 million Swedish crown ($913,000) prize.
Medicine is the first of the Nobel Prizes given each year. The prizes for achievements in science, peace and literature have been awarded since 1901 and were created in the will of dynamite inventor and businessman Alfred Nobel.
