- Story Text: Turkish military geared up on Tuesday (October 8) for a prospective military strike in Syria.
All preparations for a possible military operation into northeastern Syria are completed, the Turkish Defence Ministry said in a Twitter post late on Monday (October 7).
Howitzers were positioned on Turkish side of the border across Syrian town of Tel Abyad on Tuesday morning, a day after U.S. forces had withdrawn from the area.
U.S. forces had withdrawn from an area between the towns of Tel Abyad and Ras al-Ayn on Monday. Their withdrawal will leave Kurdish-led forces in Syria that have long allied with Washington vulnerable to a planned incursion by the Turkish military, which brands them terrorists.
President Donald Trump on Monday launched a harsh attack on NATO ally Turkey, threatening to destroy its economy if Ankara takes a planned military strike in Syria too far, even though the U.S. leader himself has opened the door for a Turkish incursion.
