- Story Text: Cuba's National Assembly will announce on Thursday (October 10) a president and vice president as established by the new Constitution to restructure the government, amid strong economic tensions reinforced with the sanctions put in place by the Trump administration.
"The most capable should be selected, the one who is able to best represent the country, who has new and diverse perspectives so we can move forward," university student Monica Nunez said on Wednesday (October 09).
Some 600 deputies to the National Assembly will decide who will make up the 21-member State Council (21 members) in accordance with the Constitution put into effect last April.
In February, the Cubans ratified in a referendum the Constitution that replaced the 1976 Soviet-era text while maintaining as "irrevocable" Socialism led by the country's Communist Party.
The current president is Miguel DÃaz-Canel, a 59-year-old engineer, who replaced Raúl Castro in 2018. His brother, the late Fidel Castro, had exercised dual functions since the 1970s.
DÃaz-Canel is expected to continue as the helm of the country with Raúl Castro, 88, as the Secretary-General of the Communist Party until the next congress in 2021.
