- Story Text: Hong Kong's Mass Transit Railway (MTR) officials on Tuesday (October 8) gave the media a tour of stations damaged by weekend protests.
Rail operator, MTR Corp, on Monday (October 7) temporarily closed most of the stations in the network due to what it said was "serious vandalism".
The network was closed on Saturday (October 5) and operations were minimal on Sunday (October 6), hindering movement around the city.
The network carries around 5 million passengers a day. Officials said the train service on Wednesday (October 9) would end at 8:00 p.m. (1000 GMT), four hours earlier than usual, to enable repairs work to continue.
On Sunday, tens of thousands of protesters marched peacefully through the centre of the Chinese-ruled city, wearing face masks in defiance of colonial-era emergency powers that threaten them with a maximum of one year in prison for hiding their faces. The rallies deteriorated into running clashes as night fell.
Police fired tear gas and used baton charges in an attempt to disperse petrol bomb-throwing protesters in several locations across the Asian financial hub.
