- Story Text: Mourners gathered for Jewish Shabbat prayers on Friday (October 11) outside the Halle synagogue where two people were killed in a gun attack earlier in the week.
Amid sorrow for the victims, a visiting Rabbi from Canada told mourners their gathering was a message of hope and an example of how to respond to acts of terror.
Hundreds of people congregated outside the synagogue in a display of solidarity with the Jewish community, lighting candles and laying flowers at a tribute by the synagogue's bullet hole-riddled entrance.
"It is urgently necessary, for me but (also) for all us, that we see that we can do something, and I have a big hope that we do all do something to show civil courage. Tonight is good for us," a woman who attended the prayer, Monika Wille, told Reuters.
Dozens of people were at the synagogue on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish year, when the gunman tried to blast his way in - only to fail to breach the solid locked gates.
Investigators found 4 kilograms of explosives in his car.
In a video lasting more than 30 minutes that the attacker live-streamed from a helmet camera, he was heard cursing his failure to gain entry to the synagogue before shooting dead a woman passer-by in the street and a man in a nearby kebab restaurant.
Two other people were injured but not critically.
