I mean there have been multiple storms that have come through within this year, I mean it was just last month that the Tokyo area experienced a fairly damaging storm and this one I think is certainly going to top that. If we look at the map here, we can see that its track is taking it towards the Yokohama/Tokyo area, and it will come through by Saturday night, and then by the time Sunday rolls around and the Rugby World Cup is scheduled to resume, it will be offshore but again, what are the effects of that storm as it passes through on Saturday, and it's just one of those ones where we have to wait and see." I mean, very strong winds, high tidal surges, intense rainfall, I think that's going to be the big thing. I mean, some forecasts are pumping out more than 500 or 700mm of rainfall, so absolutely incredible. So what will everyone wake up to on Sunday morning? Anything that's not nailed down is going to be strewn about, you could have trees knocked down, you can have power lines that are down, and again the flooding, so will people be able to move around Sunday morning, 'cause I mean this is a life threatening event and so you could have emergency medical services that are needing to tend to people. So, Sunday morning in the Tokyo area is going to be quite interesting to say the least." So, probability and odds-wise, October makes sense to hold such an event, 'cause again, this has only happened twice before, so it's just unlucky, it really is." - Story Text: As Japan embraces for the most powerful October typhoon to hit the country since meteorological records began, a weather expert says the storm seems set to pass through before the scheduled game between hosts Japan and Scotland, but warned the impact could be felt in its aftermath.
Daniel Redo, a director of Agriculture at Refinitiv, said the storm is an usual occurrence for the time of year, saying it would be difficult to estimate the level of damage and its effect on the game.
Typhoon Hagibis, which means "speed" in the Philippine language Tagalog, is due to make landfall on Japan's main island of Honshu on Saturday (October 12), a month after one of the strongest typhoons to hit the country in recent years destroyed or damaged 30,000 houses and caused extensive power outages.
It threatens to batter the Japanese capital Tokyo and its adjacent city of Yokohama - where the game will take place - with the heaviest rain and winds in 60 years, shutting down stores, factories and subway systems and disrupting the Formula One Grand Prix in addition to the Rugby World Cup.
Grand Prix organisers canceled all practice and qualifying sessions scheduled for Saturday, adding that the qualifying round would be held on Sunday, before the final race takes place as planned.
The approaching super typhoon has already forced the cancellation of two matches at the World Cup, New Zealand v Italy - which saw Italy knocked out as a result - and England v France.
Sunday's game between hosts Japan and Scotland, where the winner secures progression to the next stage, is in doubt.
