- Story Text: Hong Kong police on Friday (October 11) denounced rumours of murdering a female protester and disposing her body as "malicious slander" aimed to "stir up grievances" in society.
"Not only (are) such rumours totally false, but it is also very cruel and disrespectful for the family of the deceased. We express regret about such irresponsible remarks. We reject any attempt to discredit us," said Kong Wing-cheung, acting superintendent of the police's public relations branch.
Kong said that he could not comment on a recent accusation of police sexually assaulting a female university student, citing "great difficulties" in initiating an investigation due to lack of "basic information".
What began as opposition to a proposed extradition law, that could have seen people sent for trial in mainland courts, has grown into a broad pro-democracy movement and a serious challenge to Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
