- Story Text: Tensions boiled over in the streets of Santiago on Saturday (October 12) to mark Columbus Day, with protesters using the occasion to call for greater protections for indigenous culture and rights.
Reuters video showed a line of protesters pushing against officers armed in riot gear. An armoured vehicle later arrived at the scene to douse demonstrators with the water cannon.
Undeterred by the flair up, protesters continued their march in downtown Santiago. Many of the protesters were from Chile's Mapuche community. Since colonial times, the Mapuche have resisted Spanish conquerors and state rule.
October 12 marks the anniversary of the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas in 1492. Many indigenous communities come out in protest, decrying discrimination, poverty and displacement since colonial rule.
