- Story Text: Rihanna is releasing her first visual autobiography, adding "author" to her list of achievements.
The 504-page book is large, weighing in at 15 pounds (6.8 kilograms), and measuring 12.6 x 16.5 inches (32 x 42 cm).
"Well it was going to be bigger!" Rihanna told Reuters at her Book Party at the Guggenheim Museum in Manhattan, New York City, adding, "You want to include so many of your memories for your fans to share with you. These are moments, some of which they've been a part of, some of which they have no access to. And so it's a special combination of that - a bit of my past and they get to see the evolution of my career, a lot of which they have been a part of."
The large coffee table format book features more than 1,000 photographs from Rihanna's childhood in Barbados up to her worldwide tours, and includes fashion moments, private time with friends and family and showcases intimate photographs of her life as a musician, performer, designer, and entrepreneur. "Rihanna" was five years in the making and the star is very pleased with the result.
"Oh I'm more than happy, I've been working on it for a long time, I'm gonna be happy about it. And that's the thing, that's how I am with every creative thing that I do; I want to be happy with the art before people even get to meet it and have access to it and this is one of those things."
The book also contains 11 special inserts, including a removable poster, and seven gatefolds and comes in a printed black carrying case. Rihanna said that the most frustrating aspect of creating a visual biography is that time doesn't stand still.
"As you're editing the moments that you've already captured, moments are happening and so you have to keep adding and adding and adding and then you're, like, hold on, hold on, the book is taking longer. It's taking longer because we have to include this, these are big moments that are happening in our lives and in my career and you don't want to leave anything out, because my fans have been waiting on it for so long, you can't leave the book back at 2015, you know? (LAUGHS)"
Rihanna is working on a new album which features a strong reggae style, but she gave no hints about when fans can expect the album's release.
"Well reggae is something I grew up on. Reggae, I love reggae music, it's a part of my DNA. But, we'll have to see when that happens."
In addition to the large-format edition of "Rihanna," there will be three limited editions, on which Rihanna and publisher, Phaidon collaborated with The Haas Brothers.
"Rihanna," which is published by Phaidon, will sell for $150 (USD) and comes out on October 24, 2019.
