- Story Text: France's First Lady Brigitte Macron went back into the classroom on Monday (October 14) for a charity event benefiting the prevention of rare diseases.
Macron was visiting Paris' Suzanne Lacore Middle School to lend her voice to the European Association against Leukodystrophies (ELA), a charitable organisation that funds research for a rare group of degenerative conditions known as leukodystrophies.
Leukodystrophies affect the brain, the spinal cord and peripheral nerves. The disease can be diagnosed into adulthood, but children with the illness have life expectancies of only five to 10 years after diagnosis.
Macron, a former teacher, read a piece of text to a class of 10- and 11-year-old students for the dictation exercise. The text was written by Nicolas Mathieu, a winner of the Prix Goncourt, France's highest literary honour.
The event took place as part of an annual school fundraising campaign by ELA. In the 2018 school year, more than 3,100 schools participated in the campaign, with over 500,000 pupils involved.
