(SOUNDBITE) (English) ACTRESS HARLEY QUINN SMITH SAYING: "He just like was not expecting what I chose to do. I took a - I had a very different take on my character than he thought of her at first. And so, he was like, what is happened? He kept saying that I was acting in a different movie because they were all like really broad comedy and I was trying to like, ground it a little bit with my character. And so, he tried to give me line readings and I got really mad. So, we got in a fight. But then from then on he was like, oh I see what you're doing and it's a great choice. And then we got along from then on out." Like, my wife had asked me at the end of the day, she's like, how'd Harley do? And I was like, I think she did great, but she's in a completely different movie. We're all making comedy, she's doing a drama over there and stuff like that. And at one point I gave her a little like line reading direction. And after the take was done we were watching it on playback - she had this like sour puss on her face and I was like, are you all right? She's like, you gave me a line reading, she's like, actors hate line readings. I'm like, oh, yeah you're right, I guess I've heard that. But I've also been an actor and I love it when a director gives me a line reading because then I know I'm going to be in the movie. And she just took that and went back to work. She was a real discovery man. She - I didn't know that acting in this movie was going to pan out for her, but it really did. She grounds the movie and gives it this wonderful heart and you believe that she longs for a dad even if it's Jay, it kind of works." SMITH SPEAKING TO REPORTER (SOUNDBITE) (English) ACTOR, WRITER AND DIRECTOR KEVIN SMITH SAYING: "I almost died a year and a half ago. And son I was wanting to make this movie prior to that. But post heart attack, like I was, they told me had an 80 percent chance of dying that night. And it was the worst odds I've ever had in my life. And I had no regret about dying because I had a pretty good life. But the only thing I did regret, I was like, oh shit, if I die tonight 'Yoga Hosers' was the last movie I ever made. Fuck, not the way to go. So, I knew I wanted to make this movie and I knew it was going to be like, kind of a walk down memory lane. This seemed like the better movie to die on, so to speak. So, I begged the doctor to save my life, he did. I got healthy as I could and within a year - one year from the day of the heart attack we were starting to shoot the movie. We planned it that way as big like fuck you to death." I mean, I definitely feel like it's different then all the other movies in the sense that Kevin had written a lot more dialogue for this character and there was a lot more to say. And then also, you know, I played a different role and when I found out I was being a father, there's some heartfelt moments in here." Jay and Silent Bob are up to their old tricks in the first sequel since the 2001 original. The cast of the new film hit the red carpet in Los Angeles, California on Monday (October 14) to celebrate the film's upcoming release.
Writer, director and actor Kevin Smith suffered a near fatal heart attack in 2018 and vowed to make a reboot of the classic if he survived.
"I begged the doctor to save my life, he did. I got healthy as I could and within a year - one year from the day of the heart attack we were starting to shoot the movie. We planned it that way as big like fuck you to death."
Smith stars alongside his loyal sidekick Jason Mewes as the 'stoners' fans all know and love as they try to stop a Hollywood studio from recreating a movie based on their characters.
This time Smith's real-life daughter, Harley Quinn Smith joined the cast and the duo revealed the first day on set wasn't easy.
"He kept saying that I was acting in a different movie because they were all like really broad comedy and I was trying to like, ground it a little bit with my character…So, we got in a fight," explained Harley.
However, ultimately Kevin realized she was a real discovery.
"I didn't know that acting in this movie was going to pan out for her, but it really did. She grounds the movie and gives it this wonderful heart and you believe that she longs for a dad even if it's Jay, it kind of works."
The film is packed with cameos from Rosario Dawson, Ben Affleck, Jason Biggs, Tommy Chong and more.
"Jay and Silent Bob Reboot" hits U.S. theaters October 15 and 17.
