- Story Text: Police used water cannon against protesting firemen in front of the French National Assembly on Tuesday (October 15) on the margins of a national demonstration over their working conditions.
Thousands of firefighters from across the country attended the protest in Paris calling for increased pay, protection of their pension benefits and greater respect for their profession which they say is increasingly being relied on to fill gaps elsewhere in the public sector.
As well as fighting fires, firemen in France also intervene in road traffic accidents and medical emergencies but they say they are increasingly being called out for non-urgent health problems because of a lack of ambulances and doctors, particularly in rural areas.
Away from the main protest route a small group gathered in front of the French lower house of parliament on the banks of the Seine where police responded with water cannon.
