- Story Text:Hong Kong police on Monday (October 14) condemned the manufacturing of homemade bombs during the weekend protest in the tourist district of Mongkok on Sunday (October 13).
Also known as an improvised explosive device (IED), a homemade bomb was used for the first time in the four months since social unrest gripped the Chinese-ruled city.
The protesters are angry at what they see as Beijing's tightening grip on the city, which was guaranteed 50 years of freedom with the "one country, two systems" arrangement under which it was returned to China. Beijing rejects the charge and accuses Western countries, especially the United States and Britain, of stirring up trouble.
Protests have attracted millions of people but have gradually become smaller in recent weeks. Yet violence by hardcore activists has risen, prompting debate over tactics.
