  • Story Text: Indonesia marked the 70th anniversary of its independence from Dutch colonial rule with a state ceremony on Monday (August 17).
    President Joko Widodo led the ceremony in the national palace for the first time since he took office last October.
    He is the seventh Indonesian president, and the second direct elected president after the country gained independence in 1945.
    Widodo inspected the guard of honour, Air Force and Navy in a solemn ceremony attended by Indonesian ministers and foreign dignitaries at the palace.
    It was followed by a flag raising ceremony and concluded with air force flying over the palace in central Jakarta.
    In a national speech in the parliament last Friday (August 14), Widodo urged bureaucrats and politicians to set aside their egos and work together to revive Indonesia's economy.
    After 10 months in office, many of Widodo's economic programs have struggled to get off the ground.
    The 54-year-old president last week hit the reset button on his government, replacing two key economic ministers and installing two experienced technocrats who are expected to improve policy coordination and dispel concerns that Indonesia is taking a protectionist turn to shield its economy.
    The multi-ethnic country is world's fourth most populous nation and third largest democracy.
