- Story Text: Supporters for Democratic candidates and Republican President Donald Trump gathered around the Democratic debate site at the Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio, on Tuesday (October 15).
"I think America has had enough of Trump," said Freeport, Ohio, resident, Jim Milleson, holding a poster in support of former Vice President Joe Biden.
A chanting group of Senator Elizabeth Warren supporters gathered on the town's main street. "Any of these candidates could help to rebuild the nation that Trump has, not destroyed, but damaged," said Otterbein University student and San Francisco, California, resident, Beth Sanford, holding a 'Win with Warren' poster.
Supporters for current U.S. President Donald Trump, a Republican, gathered in one of the houses close to the campus.
"Trump acts really like a Republican sometimes, and sometimes he doesn't," said Otterbein University Senior and Trenton, Ohio, resident, Alec Heflin. "But I support him over any of the Democratic candidates." Dozens of people lined up to enter the debate site to watch the dozen candidates fight to become a challenger to Trump in the November 2020 presidential election.
The debate comes at a critical time, as former Vice President Joe Biden has seen his once solid lead in opinion polls in the Democratic race diminished by Senator Elizabeth Warren, a leader of the party's progressive movement, who has steadily risen over the past two months.
It also comes as all the Democratic contenders fight to be heard through the din of impeachment news, with less than four months remaining until the first nominating contest in Iowa on February 3, 2020.
