French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Toulouse on Wednesday (October 16) to hold a joint cabinet meeting with their ministers.
Last January, France and Germany agreed in Aachen near the Franco-German border to deepen a 1963 treaty of post-war reconciliation in a bid to show that the European Union's main axis remains strong, and to counter growing Eurosceptic nationalism among some other members.
Wednesday's joint ministerial meeting in Toulouse was the first of its format since the signing of the Aix la Chapelle treaty and was set to tackle climate change, industrial cooperation, and defence and security.
In January, the Elysee Palace said the Aix la Chapelle treaty, an extension of the Elysee treaty, envisaged deepening Franco-German engagement in favour of security and economic development, "in the framework of a more sovereign, united and democratic Europe."
Macron and Merkel were joined by their ministers of foreign affairs, defence, and finance among others, in a meeting held in the Niel Palace, which dates back to Napoleon III.
The meeting was preceded by a visit to the Airbus headquarters, where the two leaders met French and German employees.
Later on Wednesday, Macron and Merkel will participate in a meeting with European industry leaders.
