- Story Text: Catalonia's regional chief of interior affairs said on Wednesday (October 16) that police would maintain order and prevent violence after a supreme court decision on Monday (October 14) convicted nine secessionist leaders for their role in the 2017 independence bid, sparking violent demonstrations throughout the region.
On Tuesday (October 15) protesters in Barcelona threw cans, stones and flares at riot police, and set garbage containers and cardboard on fire in Barcelona.
Miquel Buch said the "senseless" acts of violence did not represent the people of Catalonia.
Earlier in the evening, thousands of peaceful demonstrators had taken to the streets of the regional capital, some holding candles and chanting "Freedom for political prisoners".
Regional police said 30 people were arrested on Tuesday, while health officials said on Twitter that first aid had been provided to 125 people. Regional police said 43 officers were hurt.
Pro-independence groups in Catalonia began a protest march on Wednesday against the jailing of nine separatist leaders, despite a new warning by the Spanish government that it will not tolerate any violence.
The marches are expected to arrive in Barcelona on Friday (October 18), coinciding with the call for a general strike and demonstrations in the region.
Catalan separatism has long prided itself on being a peaceful movement and its leaders say that has not changed. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
