- Summary: TOULOUSE, FRANCE (OCTOBER 16, 2019) (REUTERS) GERMAN CHANCELLOR ANGELA MERKEL AND FRENCH PRESIDENT EMMANUEL MACRON WALKING IN FOR NEWS CONFERENCE (SOUNDBITE) (German) GERMAN CHANCELLOR ANGELA MERKEL, SAYING: "The news we are hearing from Brussels could be worse, to put it that way. Of course, we are waiting for the outcome of Michel Barnier's talks with the British negotiators. But we always campaigned for an orderly exit of Great Britain from the European Union. We also always said that we will not be shackled by that issue, but we must make provisions for the future of the 27 remaining members of the European Union. And I believe that the German-Franco council of minister today has shown that Germany and France are prepared for that." MERKEL AND MACRON AT PRESSER (SOUNDBITE) (German) GERMAN CHANCELLOR ANGELA MERKEL, SAYING: "Our trip to Turkey - which was planned by Germany and France in the commission - was a very important sign amongst all the differences we have in our foreign politics. To set a sign that Turkey is doing something extraordinary with hosting 3.6 million Syrian refugees, and that the treaty with Turkey is of immense importance in this regard. And that Turkey has to carry a big burden." WIDE PRESSER JOURNALIST GERMAN INTERIOR MINISTER HORST SEEHOFER GERMAN AGRICULTURAL MINISTER JULIA KLOCKNER GERMAN ECONOMY MINISTER PETER ALTMAIER

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Wednesday (October 16) she was slightly more optimistic that a deal could be reached on Britain's planned exit from the European Union given the news she had heard from Brexit negotiations in recent days.
"The news we are hearing from Brussels could be worse," she said at a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron after a joint session of the two countries' cabinets in Toulouse on Wednesday.
